A load of Daft Punk…

Ever since the 90′s, one duo has consistently pleased their fans with their psychadelic electro pop sound that has inspired millions and spawned a new era for electronic music generally, paving the way for acts like Justice, Radio Soulwax and even Deadmau5 to reach the heights they have.

With successive albums proving massive hits coming before one of the biggest tours the world has ever seen, let alone electonica, Daft Punk’s originality and creativity is not just something I alone admire.

Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter exploded onto the French house scene and went from there under the guidance of Busy P.

After playing around in France with a demo tape, they eventually signed a partnership with Virgin, getting less money then most new artists but holding onto their artistic control. And so, in 1997 the album Homework was released. Featuring massive singles in the form of Da Funk, 909 Revolution & of course, Around the World.

Following that they released Discovery which blew the band up globally, allowing for the preparation of tours to coincide with the music video’s produced by Japanese manga star Leiji Matsumoto! Years later, in 2004, the band released their last album to date, Human After All, which hit less well critically but was still a stormer of an album.

Tour set-up was awash with lights

And now, in 2009… we know very little. Rumours persist about some sort of release on 9/9/9, but these are still only rumours. If anything is released, it’s likely to be a tie-in to the Tron soundtrack the duo are working on. An announcement on that day would be nice. We’re weeks without an update on their website or myspace pages, and silence only means one thing: work! They said they were working on new material last year following a short hiatus after touring the world with their Alive pyramid set-up.

Whatever happens on 9/9/9, even if it’s nothing, there’s no doubt whatsoever that Daft Punk are one of the most seminal bands ever. They changed the face of music, earning the respect of millions of fans and musicians worldwide. I do want to see new material come from them soon, but I’d still wait to hear more quality material then rushed material.

Either way, the Tron soundtrack sounds absolutely stunning. Enjoy:
