Adidas Originals Star Wars

The embroidery on the back of the tee, undoubtedly stitched by a Droid

A while ago Adidas announced a new line of clothes under their “originals” branding to tie in a theme for 2010 – Star Wars. Taking the intergalactic route to apparel design, Adidas will release a few series’ of clothes throughout the year. One in Spring/summer (some of which are available now) and then later in Autumn/Winter.

Yesterday while galavanting around one of Dublin’s many shopping centres I made a quick stop into a Champion Sports store after seeing Star Wars themed calligraphy on card that sneakily wrapped itself around the security tag gates beside the door. No one else was in the store, bar two or three incredibly bored staff who didn’t seem to converse with each other and a security guard, who ironically, was tidying shelves. That’s how bored he was.

Despite their boredom no one approached me to ask if I was ok, but that’s a whole other scenario of which brings back horrendous memories of my days as a retail manager. Anyway, I eventually found the tiny section of the shop dedicated to a nerds wet dream. Just teetering on the right side of kitch, the clothes are cool enough to wear in public without languishing in the shame of being a virginal sci-fi über nerd.

Most of it doesn’t interest me. I am a Star Wars fan (something I had to fight for as a kid, fending off confused bullies who didn’t know the difference between ‘Wars and the apparently indeterminable series, Star Trek), and I certainly own my fair share of Adidas-branded attire. So, this is a match made in heaven. Except it’s not really, simply because a lot of the clothing seems a bit gaudy. I’m not into hip-hop style clothing. Most of the runners don’t interest me simply because they’re high-tops – or sadly, just ugly. I did, however, pick up a nice white-on-black t-shirt of a Stormtroopers head. I’ve yet to wear it. I did consider taking some snaps just for this very blog post but upon proper analysis, that would just be a waste of good t-shirt wearing. I’ll need to find a nice event to wear it at. Someone, galvanise the Twitterati and get a beers session together!

The arm stitching is quite cool also

The t-shirt is high quality, as expected. I only own one other Adidas t-shirt. A simple “classic” style blue shirt I bought in Boston last year. A lovely one that hugs my horrifically shaped body well and makes me look mildly athletic. Importantly, after a year of wear and tear it looks brand new. Not one drop of the print has fallen by the wayside. This is why I’m happy to hand over €28 of my monies to a disinterested, chavish till girl.

I don’t think they’re out yet but whenever I spot them (and if you have an online link to purchase, please share!) I’ll pick up one of the X-Wing/Millenium Falcon zip hoodies. The lightsaber fight hoodie is lovely, and available in stores now, but I much prefer a hoodie I can zip up and down. Go on, call me stubborn! I may also have a look at the StormTrooper trainers. Most of the others don’t take my fancy. Despite being high-tops I’ll still try them on, and considering purchasing them. I do tend to stick with Adidas for casual footwear. Higher quality, more comfort… etc. Good old German engineering!

I’ll wrap this rather pointless post up with the TV commercial featuring the ever-useless Snoop Dogg, David Beckham and a rather sneakily brilliant appearance from my favourite French space robots, Daft Punk.

Oh, and a Bristol Lightsaber flash mob :)

I really like this stuff, I haven’t seen any of it around yet – but then again I am locked up in college getting one of those degrees. Good choice on the t-shirt. There is that fine line between cheap tacky and cool.

I am also excited between this collaboration between tokidoki and Marvel.

Jonathan: They look amazing. Had no idea that was going on. I’m not a big “cap” wearer though… but the tee’s and hoodies look great!

I felt the need to comment on how much I hate the staff at Champions! that’s probably the only reason why i haven’t stopped into check out the Star Wars gear (that and I’m scared I’ll buy it even though I really can’t afford it). I thought it was just me being a Foot Locker employee that thought their complete lack of customer service was disgusting, but it’s good to know I’m not alone in my disgruntlement!

but yes, Star Wars adi gear ftw!

My son is a fan of Star Wars. He bought an Adidas T-shirt it is of superb quality, simple and a classic style, it horrifically shaped body well and makes him look mildly athletic. Prominently, after a year of wear and tear also it looks brand new.
